Lucy Maud Montgomery (1874-1942) was a Canadian author best known for a series of novels beginning with Anne of Green Gables. She wrote numerous novels, poems and short stories. She was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 1935.

This short story is about a brother and a sister living on an isolated island with their father, who, through a series of incidents, get reunited with their long-lost relatives. It is a touching tale that underlines the value of relationships.

The Fox and the Crow

The Fox and the Crow
The Fox and the Crow

One beautiful morning, while following his strong scent through the woods in quest of a bite to eat, the Fox noticed a Crow perched on a tree limb overhead. This was far from the Fox's first encounter with a Crow. The fact that the fortunate Crow was holding a piece of cheese in her beak this time drew his attention and caused him to take a second look.
"There's no need to look any farther," cunning Master Fox realized.
"For my breakfast, here's a delicate bite."
"Good-morning, beautiful bird!" he said as he trotted up to the foot of the tree in which the Crow was perched.
The Crow, her head inclined to one side, kept a wary eye on the Fox. She, on the other hand, kept her beak firmly pressed to the cheese and did not respond his welcome.
The Fox said, "What a wonderful bird she is! What a shine in her feathers! What a lovely body, and what magnificent wings! Because everything else about her is beautiful, such a gorgeous Bird should have a great voice. I know I should acclaim her Queen of Birds if she could only sing one song."
The Crow forgot about her suspicions and her food as she listened to these attractive comments.
She aspired to be known as the Queen of Birds. As a result, she expanded her beak wide to emit her loudest caw, and the cheese dropped into the Fox's open jaws.
As he went away, Master Fox remarked kindly, "Thank you." "Despite the fact that it is cracked, you do have a voice. But where have all your brains gone?"

Moral: The flatterer lives at the expense of those who will listen to him.
