William Shakespeare’s Short Description:

William Shakespeare was a poet, playwright, and actor from England. He was born in Stratford-upon-Avon on April 26, 1564.His father was a well-known local merchant, and his mother was a landowner's daughter. Shakespeare is largely recognized as the greatest English-language writer and the best playwright in the world. He is known as the Bard of Avon and is known as England's national poet. He authored around 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two major narrative poems, and a few other poems, the authorship of some of which is debated. His plays have been performed more than any other playwright's and have been translated into every major living language.

Substance of the Poem:

Shakespeare's sonnet "Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?" from his first sonnet sequence begins with a query on whether the poet would compare his friend to a summer's day. Everything, according to the poet, is prone to ruin. Even summer season's blooming buds, and the sun's brightness will not be spared by the overwhelming influence of 'Time.' Everything is doomed to deteriorate or vanish 'by chance, or the changing course of nature.' The poet, on the other hand, believes that his friend will outshine the summer's day in terms of beauty and personality; the season's bud, summer, and the sun in terms of longevity, since he will never die and the beauty and charm that he possesses will last forever. He believes this because his poetry will live on as long as there is life in mankind, and it is the enchantment of his rhyme that will immortalize his companion even after his death. Shakespeare's language has the power to convey his friend from temporary to permanence.

Every element is affected by the inevitability of time's destruction. Only his friend's beauty is unaffected by the ravages of time. The sonnet would commemorate his love's triumph over time and immortalize his friend's beauty. The last couplet declares that time will not be able to devour his friend's beauty because Shakespeare's love for his friend will overcome time and eternalize the beauty of his friend through his immortal verse.
